My reading skills are below average. I don't have any strength as a reader, and I real really slow. For the last 3 years I have read only 8 books. Most of them were in my junior year, where my reading habits improved drastically after leaving the English Learning Program. Moreover, my enjoyment of reading has also increased because I could choose what to read. My favorite books so far are Hatchet by Gary Paulsen and The Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka. For the last three years, I have been reading fiction, mystery, novel and so on. This year, I want to read more science books; I already got two Existential Physics and Lost in Math, books by physicist and science communicator Sabine Hossenfelder.
BOOKS
REVIEW
I have two favorite books so far: Project Hail Mary (⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐) and Endurance (⭐⭐⭐⭐ + ⭐/2). First one is about a nerd who was involved in project what should save humanity. It is my comfort zone: sci-fi, fiction, humor mixed with the terrifying situation. 10/10. I will try to finish this book before I go to the movie based on this book in a week.
Endurance on the other hand is non-fiction, harsh, surviving journey of the Transatlantic expedition group. This is totally out of my comfort zone, but I liked it so much. The author is realistic, he didn't want to romanticize the crew. He didn't show them as powerful, fearless, or heroic. Also, he tried to focus on as many people as possible.
A READING REFLECTION
UNIT 1 REFLECTION
I can’t say that any of the Signposts helped me as a reader. Reading is not difficult for me, and in almost all cases, I can easily comprehend the author’s intended message. While Compare & Contrast, Numbers & Statistics, or Absolute & Extreme languages may be beneficial for some, I find it quite uncomfortable to ask questions like “Why did the author use this method (C&C, N&S, or A&E),” which distracts me from reading.
I can’t quite explain it, but if I don’t find a topic interesting, I have a limited mental resource to spend to it. And a significant portion of this energy goes towards reading itself. That’s why, after reading and acquiring new information, I treat it as granted - without any feelings, thoughts, or even an opinion. But even if I do have interest, my curiosity usually does not go beyond 5 W-s.
